In addition to the exhibition Gilles Caron, conflit intérieur, the Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi is showing a selection of war photographs from its collection, featuring work by some of the biggest names in photojournalism.
On January 25, 2014, museum director Xavier Cannon took pride in sharing the museum’s collection with Caron’s family. The works were arranged chronologically in the older section of the building and thematically in the new wing.
In addition to the photographs of the Crimean War and press photos from the 1920s, one can admire the museum’s collection of 3,000 cameras. Not far from the first Leica—Koudelka!
This small exhibition is a fine complement to the Gilles Caron exhibition. What a great idea. If only Xavier Cannone had the means to acquire a few more works from Koudelka’s other series. Photography can freeze a moment of history, but with a lack of credit, the memory will become nothing more than a fossil.
